Somewhere for Sketchfab to Fab newbies to discuss problems

Is there any part of this forum where I can post questions relating to newbie problems regarding listing models, and giving feedback about joining Fab from Sketchfab?
I have a problem and some feedback.

Thanks.

hi, @Satintribe and welcome!
This forum is the right place to post your feedback and questions for anything Fab-related, please feel free to leave a comment, our team looks through the forums regularly.

Thank you for the reply.

Where do I start?

I’m here to ask what seems a simple question because it’s one that so far I have been unable to resolve.

I’m also interested if it’s just me who has had certain problems when creating a listing.

I also would like to give my experience of joining Fab to become a seller.

So, the question…

How do I change the thumbnail image to what I see in the Media Gallery view? I thought it would be as easy as pressing save thumbnail and it would appear in the thumbnail image box and then I could see it when looking at my listings…but it seems it’s not that easy!

Of course I have contacted support who informed me “ You should be able to change the thumbnail on the editing page of your model. Does it not let you?”
I responded by saying no and even sending a screenshot of the problem and what I’ve tried.
I’m still waiting for a response.

Update - Today (when I say today I mean that day, not today). I had an email regarding the thumbnail issue from support saying “ We’d be glad to look into this for you. To investigate further, please provide a screenshot or video of the issue you’re experiencing, along with any errors or warnings that occur”.
So once I’ve again sent screenshots and explained what I’m simply trying to do! I’m now waiting for a reply to that email.

Update - Had an email from Sketchfab (YES! It occurred to me I was now dealing with two different support teams, dealing with the same issue, who were not communicating with each other!) who was the first ticket response, who said they see my problem and what I should do is submit the model and it should re-set things so I can try again.
But…I’d already told the second support, who is Fab, that I’d already tried to resolve the issue myself by creating another listing but that has created a similar problem, basically…I still can’t create a thumbnail. So submitting the model to get a re-set wouldn’t have worked.

Update - I decided to send a new support request asking that a senior member of support combines the conflicting responses I’ve had into one single ticket in the hope I can get an answer to what I originally thought would be a straight forward fix.

That was yesterday, I’m still waiting for a reply.

Update - I’m fed up waiting so what I have now done today is rendered a 1K image myself, applied that to the thumbnail and submitted the listing. I expect problems but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. All my migrated listings from Sketchfab were approved in a couple of hours. (I have had another small problem with the listing though! see below about creating the listing ).

Side note - Another fix that was offered to fix my thumbnail issue was that I should migrate the model I was having trouble with from Sketchfab!! I didn’t bother replying and telling them that you can’t migrate individual models, they should know that!

Side note - In the meantime I’ve uploaded my model I’m trying to list on Fab onto Sketchfab and it looks good and so does the thumbnail.

Anyhow, as you can imagine it’s getting a little frustrating trying to resolve this issue. It’s getting on for a week and I’m no further on to resolving it.

So…

What about creating the listing in the first place.

I thought it would be as easy as Sketchfab.

I fill out the description and now for the upload. I see a dialog box that says - Add Media - Upload images or 3D models. So I drop my OBJ and textures into it but not much happens. Puzzled I look around and see - Add new format. So again I add my model and textures. I now see my model but without the textures applied. Okay it’s not automated I think, I must have to do something to attach the textures.
I go to Edit 3D Settings and then click on materials. All I see is the base white material that the OBJ had. Now what? I had no idea as it wasn’t obvious. I couldn’t find any help or advise as to what to do, but thankfully I eventually found what I believe is the only youtube video that showed I wasn’t looking properly so I didn’t see the tiny little box to the right of the dialog box that pops up when you click on the material section. After clicking on the little box I recognised that it was the Sketchfab style upload I was used to. No problems there then.

I know! It doesn’t sound much of a problem, but if it wasn’t for the youtube vid I found I’d still have no idea how to get the textures applied to my model.

I suppose I would have asked support, but that’s not quick.

Listing cont…As I’ve now resolved the thumbnail problem myself I hit submit, it asked if I want to add converted files. I did. But of course when I go to the page to make this happen there is no model showing. I eventually get it to appear somehow, but it has no materials. After a big sigh…I now know how to fix this, so I do.

And at last I have created my own listing from scratch. As I said above, I expect problems but fingers crossed…

I’m am surprised Fab haven’t set up a youtube vid or two on, how to’s, and resolving problems and issues for us newbies.

Lastly…

As for joining fab to sell models…

…Yep it’s a bit of a process but I got there, once I found the right browser to use! It was third time lucky…Safari, Firefox and finally Opera was the winner ! Anyhow, I migrated my models from Sketchfab without a single problem. Models, descriptions and thumbnails all created for me. I had little to do but add the prices. I was a happy bunny. Of course not so much now.

To end…

Sorry…it seems I’ve gone on a bit. Just venting a bit on the frustration I’ve had since trying to create a new listing. Forgive me I’m tied, but It hasn’t been anywhere as easy as uploading to Sketchfab.

Looking forward to when this is a distant memory and I can laugh at the trouble I had creating my first listing.

Is this just me who has had this trouble?

I had some trouble with the 3d viewer. A model pack with about 15 assets that worked on Sketchfab now crashes in the 3d viewer and locks up. yet another model pack which is far more complex works fine. I can’t move the camera or edit anything. I am leaving it for now in case it gets a fix after launch. That was in firefox, I need to try other browsers

I am also a newbie, and one of my sketchfab models got declined. I need to know what’s wrong with it because it was not specified and I need to contact support or something. But I can’t find any place where I can ask the team.

I like this place so far, with all the options I can also sell future brushes and textures here and the deal is better than flipped normals (sorry).

Can you explain to me where to contact support? I thought it was here, but I only see forums.

Also what I don’t understand is, how do potential clients find my models? I can’t even find them myself online. Most of my followers are biologists and members of the paleocommunity. So the are not digitally talented like myself, apart from 3D. Are my models on Epic Games Store? Do I need additional software for that, and when I open my accepted models from sketchfab it say “Currently not for sale”. I can’t find anything that helps me to continue my business like it was running before on sketchfab.

That is what worries me the most as well, that we will be lost in the quagmire and never make another sale again. Apart from linking my artstation to let them find me. Before we had collections and staff picks so you had self advertisement. I noticed there’s a showcase section on this forum, maybe that is what they are expecting us to use, which is great for FAB users but what about people who don’t use the forums and are just shopping for assets? … Would be awesome if after launch FAB advertised our models for us in some way, if we still have to pay yearly to use FAB that is, like we did for Sketchfab. After all it benefits them as well as us.

Just a last update.

I have now heard back from one of the emails to support I sent but as it seems like it’s going to drag on, and I have now found a workaround, that being, creating my own 1K render which almost replicates the Media gallery view, I’m going to go with that. A little frustrating but trying to fix the problem is also, so…

As for my confusion in creating a listing.

I think the creation of the three extra files is one confusion, the FBX and the other two, I forget, anyhow…on Sketchfab this is not something I have to think about. They are automatically created for me. Fab instead advise me to create these files saying they can increase sales. So I then have to do it myself. I’d rather it just asked if I want to create them and I tick a box that does it for me. What I’d really prefer is that I don’t even have to tick a box, Fab just generates them by default.

The other confusion was the uploading of the 3D model and images dialog box.

I uploaded the model, which I now know generates the media view, but adding the texture is done on the 3D editing page. I wrongly added textures when I first tried to create a listing and I was puzzled that I could only add a 1K image (yes, that’s the wording! It didn’t say Texture!). I still don’t know what the images are actually for but I, after going to the edit page, now know how to add the textures.
In the youtube video I watched his textures were automatically added.
When I create a listing I have to do the whole thing manually.

Anyhow, I have, by trial and error/s, fumbled along and I can now create my own listing. I have created two of my own now which are both live.

I do however have a crashed listing in draft! It was the creation of the extra files, fbx, etc. An error occurred (it displays this message) with those files, which I can’t remove, even when the 3D model is showing, so I can’t finish the listing. So that listing will be stuck in draft until I can delete it. It’s annoying seeing it there, looking at me, with nothing I can do with it, but I’ll ignore until I can laugh and delete it.

To end…

I hope my problems and that I have overcome them can help anyone else, like me, a bit stupid with uploading to a new platform. Strange really! I can create 3D models for a game engine but fall flat on my face when uploading those files!

Finally…

I hope we all have a good day when fab finally opens it’s store.

Edit…
At the moment I am also having to upload my models to Sketchfab, that I’m listing on Fab, because I don’t see an option to create the 3D listing on Artstation. Only an option to link to Sketchfab. I assume at some point that will change.
