I’ve had a few issues trying to save out model in parts. and the texture won’t export at all.
same model will export texture fine if its just a single obj file. but the model is a bit large and dosen’t like importing into 3dsmax. vs the parts which import fine.
Hi Chris
Are you render using the classic 3Ds max render or use Vray ?
how much tris model you exporting ? what the original tris size and how much RAM you have ?
I’ve tried a few different files.
but one of those was about 280million faces. when exported as a single obj, i got the jpg files too. when i exported at parts, i got 130 obj files. but no image files.
i was importing them different, (single obj via standard import). and the multiple files with batch merge (which gives less options).
so i assumed could have been an issue. but looking further i just wasn’t get any textures saved out from rc.
3dsmax doesn’t like importing a single file, i stopped after it tried for 2 days. vs multiple files imported fine after a couple of hours.
it will get rendered in vray later.
Hi Chris
if use with Vray there is much better and efficient solution as importing directly.
take a look on ply2vrmesh.exe tool. It can import and render very large meshes in parts.
for the texture export on multi-part export will take a look and let you know…
good idea,
I’ll have a go at import large version as a vrmesh.
ok I’ve done a little testing. vrmesh is much nicer to work with.
though it means cleaning up model a bit more before importing. (most of the models i export are enclosed, and need to have those parts deleted)
and I’m still trying to think about how to get textures imported as well since vrmesh doesn’t support that.
thanks for your suggestions
Hi Chris
We pay for special script in 3ds max what do import OBJ in 3ds max with txtr and save out as VRMESH with txtr.
But dont worry with to big meshes. can easy simplify, the details stay even if do simplification ( reasonable reduction )
so can have a idea have here a 1,8 Bil tris model with txt, it fit in RAM just by few GB ( Vrmesh used !!! and have 256 GB RAM )
But when used a 400 mil tris model the difference was hard to see… So feel free to simplify the models to reasonable sizes…
I’ve just started using the simplify tool. its been working really well. i’ve been dropping the models to about a quarter of the size. its making it much nicer to work with while keeping good details.
I’m yet to really use the smoothing or filtering tools.
