Hi Manuel
Do you need a particular triangles count or you just want to decimate it in steps down to say 10-15 million triangles or …?
Because if you plan to have “low resolution” model, just set the final triangles count directly and do not use multiple steps, as it is usual in other software solutions…
Hello Wishgranter
I want just “enough poly” count so in my object size I have enough poly’s to achieve the best possible calculated resolution from CR. For example, Agisoft calculated more or less how many “effective resolution poly’s” you could have when generating the mesh.
This object is pretty big (about 3 meters by 1 meter by 1.5 meters) and It has been captured with a 50mpix camera 50mm at 0.7meters of distance, so the resolution should be pretty high. My guess is that I need around 140 to 200k polys.
Therefore i wanted to decimate from the raw poly count 369k tris to around 200k. But it keeps failing.

Hi Manuel
No, Agisoft creates much more polygons as “needed”. But that would be for much longer discussion

You have written 200k, but do you mean 200 million?
In short, RC generates the polygon count much more efficiently (depends on a project!) and it is hard to say what you need to achieve with results BUT, if are doing a cultural heritage project, then NO decimation is allowed, so the results are delivered in the native polygone count (we know it from a state-level heritage project with 1mil+ scanned objects from small ones to whole castles).
So to deliverables: full resolution or depending on later use (10-15 million so that it can be opened and processed in an external application on an “average PC”).
Can I ask you to fill in your SIGNATURE with your PC configuration, so that I can pinpoint possible issues easier?

Yeah I mean 200 million polys hehe That is what RC generated (369 million). I normally use 7 million for a full head to reproject ultra fine details so extrapolating that to an object of that size (and for the very same amount of detail) the result is around 100-150 million… :D.
Sure!
Any thoughts on this? Capturing Reality is telling me that I can only decimate the mesh down to 160 MILLION polys… Because of RAM issues. I need to decimate it from 1.5 thousand Million polys to 300 MILLION polys… Or so…What can i do?
Thank you,
M
Hi Manuel,
The current simplification algorithm is not completely out-of-core. We have in plane to release out-of-core version in mid may.
The workaround is -
Use the filtering tool to split the model into two or more pieces. Simplify each of the model separately. They are in the same coordinate system so if you export these models and import elsewhere, it will work.
Thank you, really looking forward to that update
