Hi everyone,
In the following weeks I will be working on an environment with inspired by solar punk and art nouveau influences. It started with drawings from Luc and François Schuiten, which forms a base for the place want to create. The scene will be a close-up in a calm city square with a few houses, linked to a public glass structure and outside space. This will be looking out to a greenhouse in the distance. I am showing some references/ideas for a modular system and a general overview pitch.
I am curious about the project. Reminds me of a very old Greenhouse project from “Heurences” back in UEd3
Hey there @Sara_Verschueren,
Hope you’re well and having a wonderful week so far
Just wanted to pop in and say the references for this all look great so far. The door options alone are just absolutely stunning. I can’t wait to see what you create with this! Good luck until then
During the first week, I worked on the general blocking. There was a bit of a struggle with finding a repetition in the buildings, but I enjoy the process. I made a map of materials that I found on fab and other sites for all the different parts. 1 sort of wood, metal, and glass will be used repeatedly for the greenhouse-like parts. Different types of stone will be used for the buildings, street, and fence. This week I will model some more detail in some parts and combine more materials with the UVs.
The planes in the back and on the side will be replaced with a real landscape and greenery in Unreal.
I have polished the blocking of the different floors of the houses the previous week. This means that some got some of them more details, and others are transformed to pieces that fit the general picture more. I also started testing some brick textures and how to fit them in areas that are not straight. After this, I started thinking aboutswaller assets to create and fill the street.
Here are some shots inside the scene where the improvements from last week are visible. I have added a distant landscape from the marketplace and did some improvements on the blocking. Right now I will be working on linking the glass material I have in Unreal to some assets and working further on texturing. The street modular system will also be used again further behind the walking scene to have it more filled up.
Almost all the textures from the modular system of the buildings are added, except for the glass parts. I have noticed a problem with the geometry once this material is applied. This will need to be fixed first. Now, I will be added more small assets and vertex painting to make the street more real and full. I also will be searching for some more greenery to put on some sides of the houses, like ivy.
Different buildings parts and their wireframes, with the possibility to assemble them with different possibilities. Part 1
Greenhouses in the distance that can be puzzled together to be able to have a slight difference in shape (almost complete), and glass houses that can be used a few times within an area.
I have added few new assets, decals, and some more distance filling. The modelling of the last few decorative assets were a joy to make, but there will need to come more of those, like a bench, trashcan, … What I stumbled upon this week was an issue in the usage of painting with a lot of my materials. Once I have the solution I will focus the next days on using vertex paint on the streets, houses,..
This is coming along beautifully I appreciate the inclusion of flower pots so early in the level design. I’m so truly impressed by this already. Can’t wait to see your next update!
I started working on one of the hero assets. This will be a stone wall fountain. After the modelling and UV, I will bring it more to life in Substance painter.
First thing I did this week was reassembling small parts because they didn’t fit very well. I added a layer of vertex painting, foliage, and reshaped some meshes parts like the street floor, as well as some Uv errors. Furthermore, did I add decals to the floor and buildings. Some leakages, cracks, wear and tear. I added a wall painting, which will need a more paint on wall look somehow. The background buildings will need some better filling so It looks like a piece of city nearby. What I want to add after finishing the Wall fountain is some pots, benches and a futuristic vehicle like in the first references.
Hello @Sara_Verschueren !
Getting caught up with this thread has been wonderful! I love the work you’re putting into this to really make it feel solarpunk. I also enjoy that you’re making it a city which we don’t get to see often in such a style!
Keep up the amazing work! I can’t wait to see what you’ll do next.
