Soft vs sharp mesh faces

Hey everyone,

I have a small issue I was hoping you may be able to help me with:

When I upload a low-poly photogrammetry model (50K) exported as OBJ from RealityCapture straight to Sketchfab the mesh faces look really nice and soft like I want them to be (Image1).

However if I first import that same OBJ file into 3D software (I’ve tested both Rhino and Blender) in order to add some additional geometry (I add a little platform underneath the photogrammetry model, without touching the geometry of the photogrammetry model), after OBJ export the resulting mesh faces look very sharp in Sketchfab (Image2), even though the mesh still has the same number of faces.

My question is: how can I add geometry to the original OBJ and then export it, upload it to Sketchfab, without getting this apparent change in the mesh properties?

I’m sure it’s easy once you know what the actual problem is but since I can’t pinpoint the problem I haven’t found a good way of fixing this.

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions!
Cheers,

Tom

in 3dsmax its called the smooth modifier.

I’d do a search for smoothing groups in blender. I’m sure it will have something.

Thanks Chris!

I guess this means that RC automatically adds a smooth modifier to the OBJ files we export (Image 1 is the model as viewed after uploading the unaltered RC OBJ file)? If so - great! But I’m a little annoyed that Rhino and Blender then don’t recognise and keep this modifier after importing the RC OBJ (whereas Sketchfab clearly does).
