When I contacted CapturingReality about Reality Scan a few months (several months) ago, I was told it’d be released to the public in June. It’s now almost August.
I wanted to include it in a class I’m teaching on Unreal Engine for virtual production. Is there any information on its status?
Thank you
Paul Griswold
Asst. Professor of Animation @ MTSU
Hi Paul,
with the tremendous amount of valuable feedback we’ve received from our community, we are currently working on updating and improving the RealityScan application. These changes will however affect the time of release, which is now planned for later this year for iOS devices. So, that was 2 months ago. I really want to support your product and company. I’m a professor teaching a class in using Unreal Engine for virtual productions. We’re now in week 5 of the semester and in 2 weeks I’m teaching a section on photogrammetry. I wanted to include the iOS app in this section, but it seems I probably won’t be able to.
Furthermore, the EULA your company requires for universities makes it impossible for me to teach RealityCapture as well. In case anyone is unfamiliar, the EULA requires any images created from RealityCapture models must have the company’s logo or a credit on the image. Sounds reasonable, but there’s one problem. The logo/credit is required, even if the image or animation is used in 2, 5, 10 years or more, as part of a marketing campaign - and if for whatever reason it happens to be cropped out, the university will be held legally and financially responsible and can be sued by Capturing Reality.
I’m all for crediting the company for allowing me to use the software to teach my students. We give PIXAR credit for Renderman on all student films that use it. But PIXAR’s EULA doesn’t say we have to include their logo on every image that’s rendered with PRman for all eternity no matter the circumstances.
I’m sure some annoying corporate lawyer came up with this and hopefully Epic will do something to remove it, but you guys make it very difficult for me to help create loads of students who know and use your software.
Hi Paul,
Regarding teaching photogrammetry, you should be able to cover everything using the PC app.
Regarding the EULA, please can you let us know which part of the EULA this is?
