Snapping sucks a lot!

UE 4.10 and still suffering when trying to put two objects exactly close one each other. I find almost impossible to move the first object to a given vertex of the second one. I use the V + drag to move the center of the first object and then use Alt + V + drag mouse wheel to move first object to a vertex of a second. If I do not hide all the rest of the level, is a pain in the ***. The final vertex always is any random vertex of any of the objects in the scene.

My proposal for this is a feature as follows:

  • Select an object.
  • Click a key (say N) to show the vertex of the object (a kind of vertex mode instead of usual object mode). In this mode the vertexes of the object are presented.
  • Click in a vertex (a right click on it, for example) to open a context menu “Set as reference point”. This menu sets the vertex as a reference point for doing snapping. Also center of edges should be shown and could be selected.
  • You can select reference points in any object and they persist in the level as any other data. They do not dissapear when objects are deselected.
  • An option in Settings could be added saying “Snapping objects using reference points”. If activated, then next action will be allowed.
  • If the setting is active, when moving an object, it snaps to the reference point of the nearest object as you move it so both reference points in both objects are snapped.
  • finally a “Remove reference point” in the conext menu of any object would be helpful to reset object and remove reference points.

This way of work will allow to:

  • Finally have snapping without the need to hide objects in the scene, which is not productive.
  • Snaps to any kind of point or vertex in an object and in a click, not needing to drag the center of the object to a difficult to select vertex.
  • Snap vertexes for objects, which are super useful data of an object, are saved in the scene and can be reused as the level is being edited.

Any luck to implement this options in a future release? Any developer can offer some help here?

You should propose it on answersHub https://answers.unrealengine.com not here… I don’t know if you will be listened about technical engine features if you write in this forum section.
But yeah, I’ve got your point. Vertex snapping sux big times… I wish to have the possibility to grab an object by vertex and then snap it to vertex of another object… simple right? Just how it works in any 3d application.
There are so many of this tiny little annoyances in UE4, so the content creation always consist in this hard, voodoo ninja way of work…
Nonetheless, it’s still a great engine and there is no better alternatives, so I shouldn’t be complaining.

EDIT: You can also write about it here: https://forums.unrealengine.com/forumdisplay.php?24-Feedback-for-Epic

Anyway, Cheers.

It’s still happening in 4.10? Man we’ve been living with that random snapping shiz for a long time. It’s super annoyng, got to the point where I’ve given up on the translate gizmo and just type in my translate values.
