Snapping meshes to vertices

I read that you can snap meshes to vertices, or at least the pivot point, by pressing V and using MMB. So in order to snap two vertices, you have to move the pivot to the vertex first.

Problem is the pivot doesn’t snap when I try to move it… so how can I snap two vertices together?

Thanks. I honestly cannot get the hang of it. Seems to be extremely unreliable and/or has pretty big usability issues. Surely it’s something UE users have to do all the time…
