I am learning alot about photogrammetry. And I was wondering if the smartphone from today can compete with a DSLR? I have read about a important difference: for e.g. the sensor is bigger on a DSLR therefore the amount of light that can enter the sensor is bigger than a small sensor in a smartphone. This produces more quality and realistic images. Does that mean that a DSLR with a 24MP camera (with a good lens) is better than a 48MP smartphone camera for photogrammetry? Hope someone could help me out with this.
Yes, indeed a dslr camera provides much more added value than a high end smartphone camera. Sensor size, lens quality and distortion, sharpness, low light capabilities, manual settings, flash etc. There is a lot to talk about and I can’t recommend it more.
While modern smartphone cameras have impressive megapixel counts, DSLRs generally have larger sensors, which allow more light and detail to be captured, resulting in higher quality and more realistic images. For photogrammetry, a DSLR with a good lens and 24MP will usually outperform a 48MP smartphone camera due to this sensor size difference. However, smartphone cameras are becoming increasingly capable and can be very convenient for certain projects.
