Skulls and Wheels | Arcade Combat Racing Game

Skulls and Wheels is a combat arcade-style racing video game being developed.

I’m Ravindu, team leader of RAM Studios which is an indie video game development team located in Sri Lanka.

We started making a video game called Extraction Valley as our very first project in 2018 with only main 3 team members and it was released on Steam in 2019, but the title was not a success due number of facts. But we have learnt many things as it was our first project.

Then, we have this ongoing project called “The Chase”, a survival horror single-player story video game which is mainly developed by our co-team lead Prabhath. This project is now at the final stages and I’ll start another thread to post updates of this project as well.

Meanwhile since the release of Extraction Valley we let many people to join our team and trained them in different disciplines. We believe that our official third title finally can be initiated with this excellent team of 10 members. This concept of Skulls and Wheels came to my mind in 2021, but the team was not ready to lift it up at that time and now as the third title we have chosen this combat arcade-style racing game.

Our plan is to create a vertical slice of the game and submit it on the Epic MegaGrants with a purpose of achieving a funding to support the next stage of development. We will post our regular updates in this thread and I hope you all will support us giving feedback.

Today, we’re thrilled to share a detailed update on our positioning system, marking our first public development announcement. Whether you’re a fellow game developer or a racing enthusiast, we hope this insight into our process will be beneficial to you too!

The positioning system is a critical mechanism that precisely tracks each player’s position on the racing track. With our fast-paced arcade-style gameplay, nailing down accurate player positions proved to be a challenging task. Here’s a breakdown of the methods we explored, leading us to a clearer understanding of the system.

:small_blue_diamond: Method 1: Triggering via Collision Boxes :package:

Our initial research led us to this method, which relies on strategically placed collision boxes along the sides of the cars. As players reach parallel to these boxes, their positions are triggered and updated within the system. However, we encountered some accuracy issues when racing behaviors overlapped, leading us to explore alternative approaches.

:small_blue_diamond: Method 2: Triggering via Line Tracers :traffic_light:

Building upon the previous method, we experimented with line tracers (approximately 4-5m in distance) for each player’s car. This approach allowed for more precise tracking, but we discovered it wasn’t foolproof, especially when AI car behaviors interacted with the same components. To enhance runtime accuracy, we implemented logic to obtain multiple lines simultaneously, forming a radial shape for the tracers.

:small_blue_diamond: Method 3: Distance Tracking :straight_ruler:

Ultimately, we found the perfect fit for our game design: distance tracking. This method proved to be the most suitable for our fast-paced arcade style. By simply tracking the distance covered by each player along the common race track, we achieved a reliable and independent approach, free from unexpected bugs caused by AI behaviors. It provides a seamless and accurate player positioning experience.

Drifting, a fundamental mechanic found in simulations, arcade racing games, and real-world scenarios, takes center stage in our development process. Leveraging the power of Unreal Engine Chaos Vehicle components as our physics engine, we’re creating an accurate and customizable drifting experience like never before.

:wrench: Fine-Tuning the Drifting Mechanism: Steps in Progress :hammer_and_wrench:

We’re leaving no stone unturned in perfecting the drifting experience. Here are the functionalities we’ve completed so far:

:one: Correct Center of Mass (COM) Positioning: Ensuring the rear wheels maintain smooth contact with the track surface, we’ve calibrated the COM of the vehicle accordingly.

:two: Precise Steering Calibration: We’ve carefully calibrated the steering to align with the lateral forces generated by the car’s acceleration, allowing for precise control during drifts.

:three: Friction Management: To replicate the authentic drifting style, we’re considering the friction of both the front and rear wheels, fine-tuning the car models’ drift behavior.

:four: Enhanced Collision System: We’ve tweaked the collision system and physics behavior to prevent the vehicle from rolling over, maintaining stability and safety.

:five: Dynamic Camera Perspectives: Immerse yourself in the action with our implemented camera system, offering seamless perspective switching between left, middle, and right, expanding the opening angle and zoom distance.

However, our work is not yet complete. Here are the functionalities we’re still working on:

:construction: Drift Assist: We’re in the process of implementing a circular rotate drift system with drift assistance to help you achieve those perfect slides with precision and control.

:construction: Steering Assist: We’re working on incorporating steering assistance within the circular rotate drift system, ensuring optimal maneuverability and responsiveness.
