I have a strange issue that I’ve never encountered before. Maybe it’s something in the latest version of the software (v1.2.0.16813). I have an object processed with 8k texture maps… when I go to simplify it, it only generates 4k maps and I can’t seem to find a way to correct this.
Simplify tool settings:
Color and Texture Settings:
I haven’t touched any settings at all - this just started happening all of a sudden I believe after the software updated (using entrepreneurial version). And sometimes it will generate an 8k diffuse (I believe it did for one model) map but a 4k normal map. I can’t seem to find where the setting is that’s causing this. Or maybe it’s one of these settings that somehow automatically got changed upon updating?
Update: If I generate textures after decimating (via simplify) - they all generate at 4k no matter what my texture settings are set to. Seems I might have to unwrap the decimated mesh again but then the normal map would be destroyed.
I know that I can take this into another software to bake textures from a high triangle count model to a low triangle count model but my point is that Reality Capture used to do this just fine using the Simplify tool - it was a very handy and quick way to decimate and generate normal maps for models. Now though, it only seems to generate up to 4k maps - where I need 8k as before.
Regardless of model size, I do need 8k textures. 4k is too low resolution for very complex objects.
I know the maximal texture count should be 1. I set it to 2 for testing this and hadn’t put it back to 1 yet when I took the screen grab.
I just tested at various scales - uv unwrapped at 16k - still the Simplify tool now only generates 4k maps… this used to be one of the more powerful tools in RC but I can’t use it as often if it can only do 4k maps :(
I was testing this and for me it creates 8k textures after simplification:
and I used these settings for texturing:
and for Simplification:
There are some differences.
If these settings won’t work for you, can you try Clean install and then compute texturing and simplification again? To Make it like a clean install open RealityCapture with pushed SHIFT and choose this option. If you choose option “Make it like a clean install”, you will need to activate your RealityCapture license again.
I’m having the same issue. No matter what I do I keep getting 4K textures exported when i desperately need 8K. Tried the above settings with no luck.
I’ve noticed that when I try to do a level of detail export on a model i only get 4K textures out as well. The first time I tried this I was able to get it to export 8K textures for LOD1 and LOD 2 I believe.
ProtokolSound, this might be specific to your simplified model sometimes smaller objects will not unwrap at 8k, using the default unwrap settings (which is what the simplify tool uses). Please can you check this by trying to unwrap the simplified model? If you can get an 8k unwrap then you can reproject using the “texture reprojection tool” If you can’t get an 8k unwrap you can try to force it, by using the “fixed texel size” style, and setting the texel size to smaller than the “optimal”.
