An idea for the Sidescroller device
Maybe a “Cursor” option could be added, which works similarly to games like Terraria. When on, the user’s right stick (or Mouse on PC) works like a cursor on a desktop, that the player naturally aims towards. The cursor itself could probably just look like the crosshair like how the 3rd person device’s lock on looks.
