show hidden properties in details pane when selecting multiple objects

I deal with a lot of datasmith imports, which loads my outliner with a massive hierarchy of actors and meshes… often, i just want to apply a material to all of the meshes. currently, this involves clicking through the list and individually selecting meshes. if I select the entire hierarchy, the actors are selected along with the meshes, which makes the details panel pretty much useless because only properties common to both actors and meshes are shown…

I found, in the “select” menu, “select all StaticMeshActors” but this selects all of the visible static meshes in the entire scene… which means i need to go through and hide (click the eye) everything that i don’t want in the selection…

there are other menu items, including: “select all geometry in hierarchy” but so far i haven’t gotten it to do anything at all.

So my question would be either:

  1. how can i select all the static meshes in a specific hierarchy, or

  2. if i select all the the children in a hierarchy, including the actors, how can i make the materials pane visible so that i can add one stupid material to the 500 meshes without clicking through and individually selecting meshes… or

  3. maybe- how can i remove actors from a selection- that would be another way, i suppose…

I hope this makes sense! Thanks in advance!
