Im making a game, and Im wondering if I should animate in Unreal or not.
Right now Im making and rigging my models in Blender and then exporting them to unreal, my only question is if I should animate in Unreal or Blender?
Ive seen and read plenty of videos and forums of people talking about the pros and cons of both but Im leaning towards unreal since then I would have it in one place and could make adjustments to the animations in-engine and wouldnt have to go back and reexport.
But im really not sure if this is a good way of thinking of it, any feedback would be appreciated!
If by animations you mean walking, jumping, punching… even these “basic” animations are so intricate that it would be very impractical to attempt to create them using control rigs. I would recommend using Blender for those.
I’ve opted to start animating in unreal instead of blender since recently. I’m not an animator though.
I think you can get the same results with either.
Honestly think is just a matter of personal preference. But like you I liked the idea of having everything inside Unreal.
I actually export my characters as Static Mesh FBX assets, and make them characters in unreal, add the bones, weights, and rigs in unreal as well.
Just try and be organized, you end up with a lot of assets animating in unreal.
No.
The engine is good if you happen to have a Rokoko suit since you can record better face capture for free alongside the animation by streaming into Unreal and doing your initial take there.
Aside from that, the engine is sub par since it’s not really meant to do Animation.
The tools you find in any DCC are far more complete. You’ll probably have a way easier time, particularly on complex stuff.
