Hey guys, I decided to start this thread to share my journey through the creation of my first short film and hopefully we all can learn from this process. I have many ambitious projects that I would like to develop, but I’ll begin with a humble one. “Moonlight” is the story or a little girl who is followed one night by the moon.
This is my first experience with character design and I think I could use some help with the hair, luckily we’ll be able to use the new hair and eyes shading model in UE4 4.11.
So this is where I am at the moment. I just need to finish modeling some more props so I can create an animatic inside UE4.
I’ll upload updates as I go and all criticism and comments are welcome.
Hey guys thanks for your words. I’ve been looking for a solution for the hair and I found this post and I think Gmh2looks like a great solution. I bought it and I’m loving it, it’s pretty easy to use. I’ll upload some screenshots soon.
I’m also working on the third character “Mommy”. Here’s a sketch of it, I’ll start modelling her soon
I’m just posting a quick update showing the progress with “Mommy’s” model and the hair. Gmh2 has been easy to use, I just need to learn how to bake it.

Hey guys! Quick update here:
After battling (still) with the baking the hair I managed to import a first model into Unreal. It’s not perfect but I think it’s a good WIP.
I’ve watched THIS livestream like a thousand times, can’t wait for 4.11 to have those hair and eyes shading models!
Hey guys, just another update.
I’ve been busy weight painting my characters, this is my first experience at it and it was exactly what I expected: a nightmare! haha I understand now how rigging is a profession. So anyway, this is just a facial animation test captured from Maya’s viewport.
I can almost start the characters animation and then export it to UE4. The fun part is about to begging!
So I’m back to the fun part: The visuals!
I couldn’t help myself to work a bit on the context for the opening scene. I also added some not-so-volumetric but convincing enough clouds.
