The bomb of this year E3, Shenume 3 is confirmed to be devloped on UE4, what they demoed (Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Teaser Trailer - E3 2015 Sony Press Conference - YouTube) is indeed build in UE4 editor and you can see that in latest devblog, which for glimpse moment they showing blue guy (RIP) dancing around the area
It looks like they only imported the characters and scenery to UE4 from the dreamcast era. I like Shenmue but I was hoping they had worked on it instead of mumbling about what is going to be like while showing us a boring and pointless scene.
Probably it’ll end up to be around 10 milions in the end, but 2 milions goal looks nosense and too tiny for something like an open world game…we’ll see
Hi everyone, I am really really excited by this game.
I would encourage all to back to see what a legend like Yu Suzuki could do with Unreal Engine: https://www.kickstarter/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3
Just wanted to say that although the first game has been reported to run into $70M, that figure is quite skewed.
Shenmue first started on the saturn, so the budget included the cost of engine develoment for that, then was moved to the dreamcast, where they had to develop the engine again. They had the luxury of fying in Voice Actors and doing a lot of crazy stuff. The game pushed the hardware like never before and I do not think theat is their goal this time around.
Furthermore $70M included the cost of the second game + all marketing. Actual dev cost was $47M.
With the tools at their disposal I think the costs can be significantly reduced, plus all of teh research is done, and the concepts and plans have been completed for years. You are right about the $10M though.
Yu Suzuki has said that $2m will provide the base game focused on story, but that to fully realise his vision he would need like $10 Million from kickstarter. https://www.reddit/r/IAmA/comments/3ahcwf/i_am_yu_suzuki_new_posting/ “I will say this: if we reach the $5 mil mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality.
At $10 million, it will truly have the features of an open world.”
I’m genuinely glad to see so many people happy that this game is coming out.
But make no mistake, there is no way this game won’t cost tens of millions of dollars to make, with a load of marketing needed on top. This KickStarter is purely about publicity. I’d speculate it may get more money out of Sony, the bigger the amount gained from KS, but the KS money will only ever be a tiny fraction of the finance needed.
– Let’s leave the appearance of Shenmue III and talk about the backend. Can you tell us why you chose to use Unreal Engine 4?
YS: It’s because it’s easy to use and fits with how I imagine Shenmue to look. There are like rendering tendencies for the different engines, and the base colors of Unreal Engine 4 added with “dampness and scent” makes it Shenmue.
– Are the colors you imagine the same as with the first two parts?
YS: Of course. Shenmue had that air humidity feeling well presented and it had a smell too. That’s what I aim for with Shenmue III.
It’s funny how he phrases that, apparently UE4 has the dampness and scent of Shenmue.
It slowed down after reaching 3mil, it been sitting there for few days now, i think it might crawl to 5mil until finishing boost which usually happen day before close, but i’m not so sure it will reach 10mil
It is not so much “will it” as “should it.” I do not think that it should reach 10mil and I think it would be unhealthy for the industry if it does.
I have no problem with the idea that there are games large publishers are on the fence about funding and utilizing kickstarter as a way to proof concept. It somewhat acts as a preorder and confers some benefits. But as with all possibilities for monetization the AAA industry is entirely capable of taking this idea and running with it to its worst end. If Shenmu does too well we’ll see more games end up this yet also chalk full of the other usual gated content and mountains of DLC that they already enjoy large profits from.
So really here is to Shenmu not meeting all of its goals.
The game looks really cool.
It’s that more and more games are using the unreal engine 4! -> I think we will have to update this wiki page: https://wiki.unrealengine/Category:Games
