ShaderCompileWorker issue

Hi all. I was faced with a problem that drove me into wild depression.

My specs:
MSI z790 Ace MAX Motherboard
MSI 4090 Suprim X
i9-14900K
128gb RAM G.Skill 4x32
SSD Samsung 990 Pro x2
Windows 11 23H2

A few days ago everything was working fine for me. All projects worked perfectly, no crashes, freezes, bugs or blue screens. Ray tracing worked great, lumen worked great, мetahumans worked great. Everything worked great.

Then my friend sent me a project he did in 5.1 about a year ago. I opened it from a folder in Explorer and selected “open in 5.3”. Unreal crashed with “shadercompilerworker failed” error. Then I opened the engine and clicked open this project. Then I clicked “convert in place”. There was a new crash with the same error.

Then I tried again and again and again. The result is the same.

After some time, all my projects that I was working on stopped working normaly. I kept getting the error “Shader Compiler Worker failed. Crash inside the platform compiler.” The funny thing is that in some projects even in the presence of a white window with a crash I could fly around the viewport, select assets, go to the menu and work in the project. But when I clicked “Ok” on the window with an error, a crash occurred.

As a result, I could not work normally. Friends told me that most likely it is the video card driver that is doing something weird. I tested different versions of drivers from the newest to the driver released at the time of the release of UE 5.3. Nothing helped.

Then I reinstalled Windows 11 22H2 from scratch onto a formatted disk. The result is the same.

Then I installed Windows 10 22H2, because the friend’s project, which initially started the chain of troubles, opened smoothly on my friends’ computers with Windows 10. I again had the same crashes on Windows 10 from all my projects. Even on new ones.

When I create a new project in Unreal and just throw a brick from the bridge into an empty level, it crashes 50%/50%

When I try to open a blueprint with a metahuman it crashes 100%.

When I try to open some level - crash 50%/50%

What I did to fix the situation:

  1. Reinstalled Windows. I tried Windows 10 22h2, Windows 11 22h2, 23h2.
  2. Tried all versions of Nvidia drivers of both types (Studio and Game Ready)
  3. I tried to open the project in 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3 engines on all versions of Windows
  4. I tried to register Trddelay in the registry at “60”
  5. Turned on and off ray tracing and skin cache (im couple of projects it helped to load the level but still crash after)
  6. Tried DX11 and DX12 in config file and in Project Settings.
  7. Formatted all disks on the PC and did a clean installation of Windows, Unreal and Nvidia drivers
  8. Verified the engine files and reinstalled the engine 100 times.
  9. Deleted configs from AppData, deleted configs and all folders except Content from projects, etc.
  10. Did stress tests on CPU (AIDA), GPU (FURMARK), RAM (WINDOWS RAM CHECK). I checked all the disks for errors and malfunctions (SAMSUNG MAGICIAN)- everything is clean.
  11. Antivirus check by Windows Defender.
  12. Run engine from Administrator

No result. Help me, good people.

P.S. I repeat. Everthing worked fine in any project from light to heavy on WIndows 11 23H2 and my specs. It started right after i tried to convert friend’s project from 5.1 to 5.3 via Windows Explorer (or Windows update the same day maybe). And now i don’t understand how i still get crashes even after clean windows installation on formated disks with clean unreal engine etc. The only things comes to my mind is that something damaged bios somehow while i was converting 5.1 to 5.3 idk.

I also updated BIOS from A.10 to the A.20 version via MSI Center. Didnt help.

I checked logs in “Saved” Folder of a completely new project after crash (tried to open BP with metahuman)

Greetings,

I know it’s obvious, but I gotta’ ask:

You reinstalled/verified Unreal? I’m sure you did, but, for some reason, unless I missed it, this step is missing from your notes.

Also, an empty project gives you no issues, correct?

  1. reinstallation and verification files were the 1st things i did when the problem appeared

  2. Empty projects gives no issues. But when i import any levels from library and try to open some maps - crash. 1 time out of 10 no crashes but 9 times crash crash crash. When i try to import metahuman in project - crash. If metahuman success and i try to double-click BP - crash

Do you have Visual Studio installed?

(There should be no crash, regardless, but again, I haven’t been through what you’ve been through.)

I tried to install visual studio 22 manually. Didnt help

But i never installed VS by myself before. Unreal installed all files he needs by itselft

Not true. You have to install Visual Studio independently.

“Tried”? As in “attempted”? Or you were successful in doing it?

This is where you went, no?:

I mean i followed the guide for installation of Visual Studio 2022 with all checkmarks needed. IT was installed. And projects started to crash even before compiling.

And i repeat. I work in UE for 3 years already. And i never ever installed VS manually.

But i did install it in this case. Didn’t help

Well. I guess i fixed this but the time will say.

It was all about CPU voltage or something. I contacted Intel Support. They told me to download Xtrem Tuning Utility and made AVX2 stressed test there. If CPU doesnt pass AVX2 stress test (my CPU didnt pass) i should go to MSI bios, Select OC, select “DigitALL Power” and change “CPU Loadline Calibration Control” from “Auto” to “Mode 7”. Intel guy said that i should start from Mode 7 and go lower value until system is stable.

I selected Mode 7, reboot and start AVX2 stress test again. CPU passed the test.
I started UE 5.3. “The Parking garage” project loaded immidietly. Metahumans loaded, DX12 loaded, SM6 loaded, Ray tracing loaded.

in my case Mode 7 worked for now. Hope the hell is over. Time will show.
