Seeking Guidance on Epic Games Store for Indie Game Sales and VAT

Hello! I’m an independent game developer based in Italy. Recently, I’ve developed a game that I’m eager to sell, and one platform I’m considering is the Epic Games Store.

I’ve run into a bit of a roadblock concerning VAT (Value Added Tax) requirements. Currently, I don’t have a formal business or a VAT account, mainly due to the potential cost, particularly in Italy. I’m reaching out to the community to see if anyone has insights into how Epic Games Store handles VAT for independent developers like myself.

I’ve noticed that some other digital storefronts act as a “merchant in the middle” or “merchant of records.” Essentially, they take on the responsibility of collecting and paying VAT when a game is sold, allowing developers to focus on their craft without dealing directly with VAT-related processes. It’s a setup similar to how traditional publishers function for novel writers.

My specific question is whether Epic Games Store offers a similar convenient treatment for indie developers, especially those without formal businesses or VAT accounts. I’m keen to understand if Epic Games acts as a mediator, managing VAT responsibilities and simplifying the process for developers.

If any fellow developers or community members have experience with this or can provide guidance, I would greatly appreciate your insights. I’m looking for information on whether Epic Games Store facilitates a seamless experience for single developers like myself.

Thank you all for your time and assistance. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.

Best regards,
G.S.
