Scale for a top-down ship game

Hi everyone,

I was wondering about the scale I should use for a top-down space ship battle game. I’m planning to include very large ships (think battleships/motherships), and I don’t know if I should do everything to 1:1 scale, as I’m wondering if having 200m long ships can break something. For instance this would translate into very large collision box, very long spring arms, and gigantic planets. I’m also wondering about nav mesh. This would probably also make texturing pretty difficult as well with very large textures.

Any advice is very much appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

I’m not sure if there’s an upper limit to world size, although there is a technical limit to floats and int/int64. Unless you need to do something like possessing a player pawn that actually boards the ship, 1:1 probably isn’t necessary. It all depends on the minimum distance that the camera can ever be to the ship.
