I’d like to use realistic terrain from satellite pictures for my game and add there foliage via SpeeTree. What I need to know is the price and time of creation of one square kilometer of terrain with and without the foliage to know how big budget I’d need for my game. Can you send me your rates or quotes or just your guess or opinion on that and describe a bit of process how to exactly add terrain from satellite pics and add the foliage? Thanks in advance.
Pretty straight forward really, you just need to do a bit of reading.
Your biggest problem is going to be sourcing satellite images that are free to use, or even purchase ones. Once you have these, applying them to a landscape is very simple.
It depends on how much precision you need. Is the resolution of the 3D landscape from google earth enough?
If so, I made a tutorial on how extract it using Google Sketchup and creating a depth map in 3ds Max (you can use any other 3d app instead of 3ds Max)
For higher res then google map, I can’t really help you. I ended up getting a map from the Town Hall for my project.
This will allow you to use real world height data. You will need a DEM viewer to be able to convert these into anything usable however. Microdem or SimpleDEMViewer should be fine.
Where is this tutorial located? Would be awesome to see how others do it. The way I have done it in the past which i think is probably very stupid/slow way is get a contour map, put the contours in autocad civil 3d then create a surface from them. Also another resource to get contour maps is arcgis to get contour maps.
