Ah, Spells and Sound PRO, you see. PRO = Pirated Rip Off
At least he/they had the decency restrict the publisher account and remove all the products from the store (As you can see here itās now set āNot for saleā and the seller no longer has products)
It amazes me, really. If I was going to go to the trouble of pirating something, I donāt think it would be animal soundsā¦
Just part of the crooked thinking processā¦
My email to news@info.unrealengine.com was blocked. Do you know of a support mail to discuss legal / piracy matters? I see quite a few different mail addresses being shared here on the forums and on google and there are most likely fake ones fishing for our data.
Iām assuming the marketplace support email?
Wasnāt aware of one, Should be marketplace-support@unrealengine.com it was shared by a staff profile on forums.
That one worked for me.
Alrighty, got a response already. This is being looked at .
Good that they are looking into it I guess, but really seems like they are just going after single entities as they pop up instead of addressing the systemic issue here (that is a lack of indemnification for marketplace buyers and a lack of oversight on what gets posted in the marketplace in the first place).
Hopefully we will see a change on this soon.
- This is OK, I will use marketplace assets.
- I canāt do business with a marketplace hosting illegal assets.

EPIC faces the same problems we do though. Iām disappointed with the short and generic āitās not our problemā but verifying that all assets in an asset pack are original works and not stolen is not an easy process. So what do we do when someone out of nowhere claims damages for our published game uses a stolen sound asset? Ofc no one cares but our wallets so what are the legal options? How do we verify the claim? Are we now hunting a rando EPIC user?
If Epic makes no guarantees to the purchasers of content, I donāt see how anyone can justify using it. I donāt think anyone is asking that they verify each and every assetā¦just that some protections should be offered so that those purchasing Marketplace assets arenāt held liable when violations inevitably occur.
Other 3D marketplaces do already make some guaranteed protections against liability (e.g. see TurboSquid Can Now Indemnify 3D Stock Up To $1M - TurboSquid Blog).
Since one canāt control the entire internet and what other people can share or do I suggest a different approach.
create products for buyers that have no issue paying for a license because they have the budget and they canāt afford in the future to have copyright headaches. if you are creating products for people that have no intention to buy your product you are just losing your time.
If you do create assets for a living, absolutely. But what exactly is that approach? Do you add some form of legal guarantee to these buyers? Or do you avoid the marketplace? How do you prevent a buyer from not resharing it to pirates? Itās not clear what you mean with āa different approachā
Wow this shows how big the damage can be! 1 million insured by 300$ a model. Speechless. Now think of all the starting game devs who publish their first game with around a few hundreds to thousands of assets. I have seen this type of thing happening with use of a single photo and damage was claimed per day. Would be a nightmare for a game dev to be selling a game for 5 years then receiving a damage claim for 5 years on an asset.
There are limits on unknowing infringement, so I assume the $1M is a bit excessive and intended for corporations that have the money to make doubly sure itās not their problem. I think the standard is more like $10k.
in the crazy and superĖ3 + superĖ3 + superĖ3 remote case that can happen to you, ask for forgiveness and change it. In addition, if it is stolen from another pack, you cannot know if you use the original pack or the stolen one. I think there are possibilities of a meteor falling on your head.
Regarding piracy, any anti-piracy measure only affects your buyers, the percentage of people who will buy your game if it cannot be pirated must also be very low, and without piracy you reduce an important factor for selling games, which is word of mouth.
About uptades, do it because it is good for sales, not intended to bother pirates.
It is hard enough to make a game to worry about things with a very low caustic.
So enjoy playing your game and donāt worry so much
Again, unknowing infringement can still lead to some charges in many places.
correct, ignorance does not exempt you from guilt. But I mean, what company has sued you for putting on the sound of a cow, without even giving you a prior warning? do you have any example?
Ummmmm let me see, how about the DMCA filings that led to the initiation of these threads?
