Root motion resetting

Hi I downloaded a Mixamo animations and added a root bone but I can’t seem to figure out why it just keeps resetting?

Did you add a “default slot” node in your anim graph?

Yes i have

Ok, I found it, it seems like you animated the hip bone and not the root bone. The definition of root motion is to animate the root bone itself, the parent of all bones. If you enable the root motion, it should be stay in one place and not move forward like that.

Im pretty sure I did animate the root bone because in unreal I animated the root bone while I had enable root motion checked and did it a second time with force root lock, and when that didn’t work I exported to blender animated the root bone and reimported to unreal. I’m starting to think its either a glitch in unreal or a rigging problem that I am overlooking.

Ok, look. I think you didn’t get what I mean. If your root bone is animated, your character will never move forward like this when you turn on the “root motion” check. Whenever you want to translate the mesh (x,y,z axis), you need to move the root bone and NOT the pelvis/hip bone. It will never work if you translate the hip bone.

It also won’t work if you enable force root lock, because it will lock the root bone translation only. Which in this case there’s no point cause you are translating the hip bone. It’s not a glitch but instead, you need to know how root motion works.

To check, you can see the real-time translation of x, y and z of the root bone. See, if they are changing or exponentially changing in hugely different.

This is why I do believe I have animated the root bone.

Does it translate forward if you enable the root motion?

yes as well as force root lock.

Then, it doesn’t work like that, somehow I think your pelvis is following the root bone or vice versa. Again, if your root motion has been done correctly, it won’t move like yours.

See mine here. Observe my root bone when I turn on the root motion. It stays 0 throughout the animation timeline.

how would you do a leaping animation without animating the root bone?

What do you mean? You NEED to animate the root bone. Again, your animation looks to me that it inherits the hip bone translation or vice versa. Maybe retargeting problem. I’m not particularly sure about this.

First thing I would like to say is thank you for your help I really appreciate you taking time to help me with this issue. But I

have found the solution and it is that I set up my character as a pawn and not a character.
