Roadmap?

Hello developers,

do you think you could publish a roadmap so that we users know what is already being worked on?
This would be very useful.

Thanks.

Hi tw2016.

Interesting question.
But how many commercial products you ever seen with roadmap available for public?
Me, never. Only freemium or opensource projects like Unity3D or Unreal have something like this.

Yes, I was thinking about Unity3D (which is not free if you really want to use it, and it’s not open source, btw.).

I did a shooting with objects of 20x20 metres, and my results were really good, much better than smaller objects.
I would therefore like to ask again if the developers can publish their roadmap. I think many of us currently need to decide what software to use, and I would just like to know what the developers will change and where I would have to invest more time and money (for example in having to buy polarisation filters, change my style of photo shooting, spend more time on more photos, etc.).
If the developers would for example say “We have experienced that many of you tend to shoot glossy materials, and we work on fixing RealityCapture’s issue with it”, it would be perfectly fine with me, but currently, I just feel lost, because some of my objects turn out great in other softwares, while they produce holes in RealityCapture, and sometimes I get answers from VladLen with huge alignment settings changes that I would never be able to work out myself. I have already spent days with alignment settings, and they always turned out badder than the default settings although I think I’m not a newbie anymore.

I hope the developers understand what I’m trying to say.
Thank you.

tw2106,

Are you using a Macro lens for the smaller objects? I haven’t had any issues with small objects, though I’m generally capturing them in a larger scene with a wide angle lens, I’ll switch to a 30mm macro for the teeny stuff though, and have had it pick up in the scene buy taking a couple of as wide as you can get shots before I swing in for the detail.

Here is a table worth of stuff, 1CM to 3CM high caught with a 18mm lens equiv.:

Thanks. I mean objects of 5x5 metres, my images are perfectly sharp.
I don’t have any problems with them in other softwares, but they are a hassle with RealityCapture (many holes, and white surfaces generally almost always produce holes).

However, bigger objects turn out fine with RealityCapture that’s why I was thinking RealityCapture was perhaps meant for aerial photography first, and they’re now beginning to realize that they need to change something because most of us capture smaller objects.

I just wanted to know about it so that I could decide which software to use on the long run.
If this is something that is being worked on, I would love to stay with RealityCapture because it’s fast.

Thank you very much for your reply in any case.

Hello tw2016.
Please check this post, about how images must be acquired for good photogrammtetry work.
Draft VS NormalVS High Detail

As for me, i don’t have any problems with objects from 5cm to 5m.
Never shot bigger or smaller, because less than 5cm is too small for iPhone camera, and too big, already required drones.

But after some discussions, looks like DSLR camera with big sensors have problem with good DOF (especially on extremely small distances), so for small objects you need shoot images with different focus for acquiring all surfaces as sharp images required for good 3D reconstruction.
