Retargeting to skeletons with extra bones

Hello, I have been messing with animation blueprint recently and was wondering if I could have multiple characters using one skeleton whilst having extra bones added on for things such as anim dynamics. The only example I could really find was in Fortnite’s characters where they all seem to use the base skeleton whilst having bones for accessories on the character.

Is this possible or is there a workaround as I do not want to have to create animations for each skeleton.
