Hi everyone,
I’d like to suggest a highly requested feature that could significantly expand what’s possible in Unreal Engine: a native voxel-based world creation system, built-in and fully supported, that allows for vertical worlds, caves, and dynamic dungeons; without needing to rely on third-party solutions.
Voxel terrain systems have become a staple in modern game design, especially for open-world, survival, and sandbox games. They allow:
- True vertical freedom; not just heightmaps
- Dynamic caves, overhangs, and tunnels
- Procedural dungeon generation
- Fully destructible terrain and real-time deformation
While there are third-party options like Voxel Plugin, which does offer a free version and some source access, more advanced features require a paid license, and long-term projects may face issues with updates, support, or compatibility as Unreal evolves.
Having an Epic-supported voxel terrain system would empower developers of all sizes especially indie and solo devs; to build more creative, vertical, and immersive worlds with fewer roadblocks and better integration.
This kind of system feels like a natural next step for Unreal Engine and would align with trends we’re seeing in many successful modern games.
Would love to hear the community’s and Epic’s thoughts on this!
