Repeated long freezes when dragging objects into the scene

Added Open World Demo Collection, and when you try to drag, for example, a tree into the scene / open a material / texture / no matter what, it freezes for at least half a minute. (the heavier the object the longer), sometimes it dies altogether. What should I do?

Is it safe to assume you’re not running the engine on a potato PC?

I have i7-9 and rtx2060

If you peek a the Task Manager’s performance tab - can you identify the culprit?

I didn’t quite understand you, but I think not

Assumption being the mother of all mistakes and all… If you’re not using any advanced hardware monitoring tools, you can still rely on the good old Task Manager to find out which element of your machine is being stressed.

Hit Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager and switch to the Performance tab at the top. This will give you a rough understanding of what is bottlenecking the performance when you do the things that give you grief. Observe component utilisation and see what spikes up.

In 99% of cases, for a PC to freeze, it will be the CPU. But hitting memory capacity and dumping data to a slow drive can make things go really sluggish.

Once you know the element that’s being taxed the most, you can investigate further. Some assets are not optimised well and can bring even a machine as powerful as yours to its knees.

Listen, while I was collecting unreal data for you, I was hanging out and I was able to add an object to the scene. Could this mean that this is just an initial boot or not? At the expense of data: eats the most unreal, cpu-20% ram-2,5 / 16

When you install and run the engine for the first time, it takes ages to Compile Shaders, it can take a lot of time and is pretty demanding in the CPU cycles and memory footprint terms. After which things should be smooth. Although there are some assets in the marketplace that are not happy even with 64GB of RAM… :expressionless:

How is it behaving now?

/ 16

Is this during the freeze?

Yes, during freezing
How is it behaving now? - I wanted to restart unreal and try to add the same object to the scene, but still decided to add another object from the same folder and unreal has been hanging for 20 minutes already. The load has not changed.

Somehow I doubt this has anything to do with UE4 per se. See if you can reproduce the behaviour with other assets. If instancing other assets works OK, it might be a faulty asset - perhaps it’s corrupted.

ok, working

another asset works, I think I just won’t use the asset on which everything hangs

Either re-download it, or avoid it :expressionless:

If you have access to source files: fbx, 3dsm, obj - any native format of the major modelling programs, you could export it again.

Ok thanks, can i thank you somehow?

Yes, you can! Drop an answer below and mention which assets was broken - you can then proceed to accept that answer, flagging this thread as a resolved issue:

Perhaps someone else will eventually stumble into it and won’t need to go through the same ordeal.

Good luck with the rest!
