Releasing a game between friends and family?

Hello!

I’ve been learning UE4 off and on over the past year and I’m really excited to finally be able to start bringing my mounds of hundreds of both physical and digital folders/documents and concept arts to life and I have a lot I want to do despite hardly knowing how to model a character let alone how to import a custom texture into the engine. So undoubtedly I have a lot of questions regarding how to go about doing this, that, and the other thing, but even before I started this slow but steady development process, one question has stuck out in my mind more than anything else: Once my game is finished, will I be able to pack it up, slap it on a disc, and release it freely only among friends and family rather than mass-release it on a platform like Steam? I have the attention span of a grapefruit and everything in the FAQ about product revenues and the like just isn’t sitting with me.

Many, many thanks in advance!

The money side is a 5% royalty on sales. So with that said if you make a game and burn your own discs and give them away then you shouldn’t owe epic games anything.

According the FAQ if you were to release the game for purchase you would need to notify epic games and then only after the first $3,000 in sales would the 5% royalty start.

That really cleared things up in both my question and what that section of the FAQ meant. Wasn’t expecting to hit two birds with one stone. Thank you!
