Rocky Clay Ground
Scanned rocky clay ground set (Marketplace)
This is a set of 16 materials that go from a base sand state to heavy rock mix variations. I’ve set up a basic tessellation material for these, but the normal maps really shine even without it. I actually prefer to use the depth as a height lerp with vertex painting to blend the materials in realtime - you can get awesome variation this way. Since they are all scans of the same material and calibrated as a whole set, the blends are seamless. I’ve been getting great results doing blends between the first and last states especially, with some of the mid level sprinkled in to break things up more.
We are using a custom scanning setup that uses photometric stereo to capture surfaces accurately - the results speak for themselves, you get awesome per-pixel normal information that gives you essentially re-light able photographs. If realism is your aim, these are fun to work with! They are also great for other physically based renders like Octane/Redshift.
I’d love to get feedback from the community on this pack as we’re working on a lot of scanned content right now, and this is our first release for UE4. (We’ve been using UE4 as our primary renderer from the start since we’ve been targeting VR and higher end realtime PC visuals) What do you all think of the format of having a complete set of variations on a material type? What other materials would you like to see?
In future packs we are looking at incorporating scanned props/scatter that go with the materials, and example scenes.
Would love to get thoughts and feedback. Thanks!
