By the looks of it, I can’t purchase a subscription without a credit card which is connected to my PayPal account, would it be possible to allow any purchase through PayPal, for example through direct debit and a connected bank account?

I can’t immediately see why doesn’t work already: what message do you get from PayPal or the gateway?
