Reimport character mesh messes up materials

If I change something in 3ds Max on my character, such as UVW’s, skinning info, or whatever, when I try to re-import the mesh, my materials always get scrambled up and I have to go through and plug the correct ones back in. Anyone have any idea why Unreal does this?

was your character split up into separate meshes? Maybe you changed the order those get read into the fbx format.
