Referencing in a weapon using an ART rig

I’m no expert with Maya, so this may just not be the correct way in general, but whenever I try to parent a referenced weapon to my weapon joint, I get an error telling me I can’t “parent a reference to a parented reference”. I feel like the error message is trolling me.

Is there another way I should be doing this?

You do a parent constraint from the weapon joint to the gun top group.
