Recreating an existing game

Hello epic community,

I recently started to seriosly think of creating an indie MMO, but just creating it from scratch is not a simple task of course, so before that I thought to try to create an mmo prototype from an existing game.

I remembered that I played Lineage2 a lot when I was a kid, googled a bit, and found L2jServer, a publicly available server for this game written in Java, and I thought of creating the client for it using UE. Of course with bit of reverse engeneering and extracting the content from the game;

My question is however, if I will eventually come to some good looking prototype and upload it on youtube (with this extracted game contents assets, etc) Can I get a copyright strike just for this? I will not have any intent to gain any revenue from that, so just positioning this as a research project from the start will rescue me from copyright strike?

Thanks.)

It’s not OK to make a project by extracting and using assets from an existing game, and they would force you to take down stuff that you’ve posted.

The L2J server is not an existing game, L2J is a free open-source server emulator fully written in Java released under GPLv3.0 license .
