Reclamation - UE5 Animation

Hey, I worked on this animation in my free time for a contest that was hosted by ASUS. Didn’t win 1st place but was in the top 10 finalists for the animation category.

The theme was Seeing an Incredible Future and my take on it was a fully biodegradable laptop made with natural elements which Nature would have no issue reclaiming.

This was my first time doing anything meaningful in terms of animation and I learned quite a bit about Unreal Engine 5.

The environments were built using all the Twinmotions packs, Megascans, Apartment Tech Props, City Sample Buildings, Ultra Dynamic Sky, Ultra Volumetric and a couple more.

The laptop was modeled by me and textured using a mix of Substance Painter and the Substance library. I wish I could have spent more time on design and texturing but animating everything was my biggest headache.

These are also some clips showing the environments. How I got reflection on the laptop screen with the Level Visibility tracks, the stream with the Megascans embankments, and bit of the set dressing in the apartment.

Hey Shaafi,

Incredible work! Especially the details of the laptop are remarkable, as is the concept itself. From the apartment you can make a separate video, showing a lot of details and close shots. In the final work, there’s no time to see all this beauty.

Thanks for the kind words!

Ah yes, the video time limit was 1 minute max so I had to go through it pretty quickly.

I plan on making separate posts for the apartment, forest and laptop in some still renders. Hopefully soon when I find some time.

Hi there @Nanited_Pepperjack,

Hope you’re well and having a great week so far!

This project is beautifully done. I’m a huge fan of environments and level design so seeing what you’ve created here is crazy impressive. The animation, however, is easily the single most impressive part. Everything about it seemed focused on the tiny details and also feels painstakingly crafted. Wonderfully done!

Thanks for sharing! How long did this project take to create?

@PresumptivePanda Hey! Really happy to hear that you liked my work. Thanks for the support; I’m flattered.

It took me around 2 and a half months to do everything. Worked on it only after my main job and on the weekends.

Pretty rad project for only two-ish months of work. I could seriously watch the keyboard separation animation for hours :joy:

Also, after taking a gander at your ArtStation I just wanted to give a quick kudos to how awesome those dagger handles look. Brilliant!

Haha! I actually was planning on some dissolve to dust Niagara effects for the laptop componets but I couldn’t figure them out and it was a bit cheesy. Thanos snap to dust type cheesy.

I did find an interesting one with distance fields but couldn’t get that to work either

Oh those, daggers are always fun. I have some more planned. Soon™

Hey there @Nanited_Pepperjack !

Not only is this absolutely stunning, but a lovely concept as well! The idea of a computer like this is so wonderful and exciting to think about. If only it could become a true reality.

In reference to your animation, I’m very sorry to hear that you didn’t get within the top 3 but top 10 is just as magnificent! I think it is genuinely beautiful and maybe I’m biased to the natural environment but I think the arrangement and lighting you showcased makes every aspect truly shine.

I do hope we can see more of your work! :star_struck:

@The_M0ss_Man Thank you!

After I was set on the idea I actually found this article/paper about biodegradable polymeric materials for electronic devices and it was very interesting. Maybe we’re not so far off from this tech.

At 0:34 seconds into my video the date on the laptop is actually set to the year 2048. Will have to see what we get by then.

I definitely have more stuff planned for UE! I was honestly quite surprised how much I got done with just the free assets available through Epic and Megascans.

Hey @Nanited_Pepperjack !

I didn’t know that article was available but it was a thrilling read for sure. Here’s to hoping by 2048 we’ll at least be in the same ballpark as your lovely design. :crossed_fingers: :joy:

The free assets available are very handy and I love to use them when I have the chance because sometimes visualizing what you want to shape is rough.
