After installing reality capture on a new computer, I keep on getting a handling exception error when starting Reality Capture which closes the program if ‘ok’ is clicked (see attached image). Interestingly, the program runs with limited functionality in the background if this error window is ignored. I have been using Reality Capture on other computers and never experienced this problem.
Noteworthy information from my side:
- I am installing the software on a PC via windows Remote Desktop and a VPN
- The computer meets all of the hardware requirements
- I have reinstalled both EG launcher and Reality Capture twice with computer restarts in-between
- This doesn’t seem to be a licensing issue

Hello @Maxwell-CME
this is really strange. is this the first RealityCapture installation on that machine?
Is this happening directly after opening RealityCapture? Have you tried application’s reset (https://dev.epicgames.com/community/learning/knowledge-base/l7YG/capturing-reality-reset-realitycapture)
Are you starting RealityCapture from the Launcher?
Hi @OndrejTrhan,
This is the first time that RealityCapture has been installed on this particular computer. This happens immediately after opening RealityCapture no matter what I do. The application reset (all four options) didn’t seem to do anything unfortunately. I have tried launching RealityCapture from the Epic Games launcher and directly from the RealityCapture .exe in program files, it doesn’t seem to make a difference.
I did another fresh install of both Epic Games Launcher and RealityCapture this morning, deleted all associated local Temp files. Still the same error though.
I can see that you have created RealityCapture MY account. Try to download installation file from My - Sign in - Capturing Reality if it will be happening also for that installation.
Before that uninstall and delete all RealityCapture data on your machine.
I followed those instructions and tried both versions I was licensed to download (1.3.2.117357 and 1.2.2.118699) with uninstalls between each. I got through the account activation process with each version, but as soon as the main program opens, it crashes with the exact same error as before. I deleted all of the Local Temp files associated with RealityCapture after the uninstall, are there any other files I should delete?
This is really strange and it could be also the HW issue as it is happening directly after application opening. What are the machine’s parameters?
This issue might be connected to some really old files located in the C:\Program Files\Capturing Reality
Please try to uninstall RealityCapture then head to C:\Program Files\Capturing Reality and delete everything you will find about RealityCapture also in ProgramData, AppData, and Windows registry. Then restart your PC and try to install RealityCapture again and run the same test.
Followed those instructions, also uninstalled Epic Games and all associated data. Restarted computer. Installed version 1.3.2.117357 from the MY website link in previous post. Same error still after registering successfully.
Computer specs:
- 12th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i5-12600K
- 32 GB RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 12GB
Not sure if there are any other specs that you need? The machine does run other software without a problem.
According to these results it seems to me like a hard ware issue.
Can you check your hard drive speed?
Can you check and update your GPU drivers?
I would also consider rebooting of your machine.
I am using a MKNSSDHL1TB-D8 SSD which should be more than fast enough. I am currently using the latest GPU drivers from the windows update (driver version 27.21.14.6172). I have rebooted the machine before and after every install.
I meant these drivers:
recommended is Studio one
In order to troubleshoot these kinds of issues, can you use this tool: “ActivationToolOpen.exe” , you can download it here .
After downloading is finished please:
- Unzip this file on your desktop
- open cmd.exe
- write to Command Prompt:
cd desktop
- write to Command Prompt:
ActivationToolOpen.exe
- Send a screenshot of your whole Command Prompt and send us the unlockdata.txt file (this file will be generated on your Desktop).
Required fields have to be filed and have more than 13 and less than 36 characters.
Required fields:
IdentifyingNumber - this must be injected into the machine, connected to Mainboard ID

I used the GeForce Experience app to update the studio drivers and Reality Capture V1.3 is now working. Thank you for all the help!
