Realistic maximum level/map size

Hi,

I am in the design phase of a game that I want to make. Eventually I want it to be multiplayer, like 8 or 12 players, maybe more. The idea is open world maps, like landscapes, farmlands, islands, that sort of thing. How big should I realistically make my maps given I would like the players to be able to jump in and drive cars and jeeps etc?

Using 1uu = 1cm scale is a 0.5km x 0.5km unrealistic? it’s about the size of my old high school. 2km x 2km? I intend to start small, but games like world of tanks do 1km x 1km and they have 30 players. what is a realistic size given that I wont have unlimited resources for servers.

cheers

It always depends on the game -> e.g which style (realistic, comic,…), which effects (do you want to see a bullet trail,…), how should the level look like (many mountains, hills,…)…
I personally would go for a 1009x1009 landscape for your map -> as long as you add mountains and valleys, it should “feel” pretty large for the player
