Realistic Feathers in UE4

Hello everybody,

Does anybody know how to go about creating realistic feathers in UE4?

Creating the asset or creating material? One feather or an entire creature?

The material for a Bird I’m modeling . I wasn’t sure if there was a specific shader that should be used or not.

Depends a lot on the bird.

Sometimes birds can have the look of anisotropic materials, sometimes they are iridescent, there are unique looks to the specularity, and sometimes translucency/subsurface scattering is important. A lot of those problems and solutions are similar to the problems with creating hair.

I’d take a look at the discussion regarding hair here https://docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/…ter/index.html and try to apply that to feathers. Figure out what parts are important to get right for your bird.

what’s your criteria on realistic ?
