Initially importing FBX with combine mesh off works fine. If I had 10 mesh exported in one FBX file, they all come in as 10 mesh. But after making changes to one of the 10 mesh and re-export the FBX, then right click on the revised mesh in content browser and choose “Reimport” combines all 10 mesh into that one mesh I reimported.
I’ve seen this happening with others on the forums since at least 4.14. Does anyone have a fix for this?
Unfortunately there’s not really a way to “Fix” it. If you want to do this, you will have to make a fresh export, when you reimport it pulls the entire FBX, and since you’re not reimporting them all it’s going to merge them.
The best thing to do would be to have each thing you’re exporting be their own FBX file, and if you’re wanting to export a kit of sorts, you make a new, fresh FBX anytime there is an update.
