I am trying to switch to a workflow with RAW files instead of JPG files in RC.
I am using a Windows 10 machine and a NEX 6 camera.
.ARW files are well recognized by windows. But when I put them in RC, resolution is much worst than the same pictures in JPG :
raw_jpg_resolution.JPG
Is this the proper workflow to put the .ARW pictures directly in RC ? Or do I have to do a raw processing in a software like Lightroom ? Or other ?
Hi Jonathan
the low-res RAW image is a problem of the SONY RAW file reader. The best option is to convert the RAWs to TIF or JPGs with DXO Optics or Lightroom.
Ok, thanks, I will have a look at DXO !
Sorry all,
A move took me out of the picture for a while so I haven’t been on the forums. Go for 8 bit .tiffs, not 16 bit as the latter isn’t supported by RC.
If you’re hard up on attaining a RAW program, ‘Capture One’ is just as good as LightRoom, sometimes better (I use LR with a bit of C1…) and there is a full version that is a lot more affordable just for Sony RAW files.
If you need any other help just say so, I work almost entirely with Sony cams (a6000 and a6500) and couldn’t, at first get the same hit ratio with my RAWs as I was with JPGs. The right tweaking though and you’ll outpace the JPG results in no time.
Thanks for all these advices !
I tested Lightroom and Capture one, but I realized that I was more looking for a batch tool to convert my raw files (.ARW and .DNG) so I found the DCRAW command line tool and it works really as a charm :
I can batch convert from a shell file. The tool generates a .PPM that I can then convert to a more standard .PNG with ffmpeg.
For those who are interested, I followed these instructions :
