R9 390 Performance

Hello all! I was wondering if anyone here is using an R9 390 or something similar on the AMD side and how does it perform in the Editor? Thanks!

It will absolutely handle Unreal Engine 4 well. Comparatively I have 2 GTX 970 but sli doesn’t mean anything in the editor so I’m essentially only using 1 card (performance is closely the same, big difference being that you have more ram). The engine is heavily GPU and RAM based to my understanding. Your card has enough juice to run the engine and then some with that whopping card specs. What CPU are you running and what is the RAM?

Thanks! I’m using an i7 2600k @ 3.4GHZ along with 16GB of 1600MHz RAM.

I used to have 4x 290 (same Chip, only 4GB Vram compared to the 390) no problems at all. Just dont expect Crossfire to work in the editor and your fine.

i’m planing on buying an r9 390 or r9 380x, but i was hearing some thing about the card overheating and having some issues with ue4, this is right ? or the issues are already fixed ?

R9 390 / 290 get very hot with the original cooler, yet they dont overheat (unless you have bad luck and get a defected one, can happen with any card and brand through). In Facts 390 / 290 are designed to run officially up to 98° C, once they reach that, they just clock down and set the fan higher. Ideally look for a Card, that doesnt has the stock cooler and you should be fine (they run colder, and don’t clock themself down then).

I got rid of my AMD cards and went with nVidia because of the frequent driver crashing in the UE4 editor. I believe it was model specific, R290 though… Before you purchase, do a search on the answer hub, because that might change your mind.

I had 16GB of RAM and upgraded to 32GB and I have seen a difference on large scenes. I believe, that’s the recommended (best) spec for using UE4…

thanks for the information Nekronata and teak421!

The driver crashes are fixed for a long time now, I also was affected by them.

And why would anyone buy a GPU in the “original” design? The custom designs are cheaper and a lot better regarding the cooling. My R9 390 (Powercolor) never goes above 70°C.

thanks for the information, what brand and/or model do you recommend to buy ?

What fixed it? An AMD driver update, or something on the UE4 side?

This was reported just at the beginning of December on 4.10… Not sure if he’s on the latest drivers though…??

Reviewed and its the R9 380 which is the exact same card I had with the exact same issue…Looks like the issue is still ongoing with that specific card.

I recommend the one I have, since I know that it’s working very well  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131672&cm_re=R9_390-_-14-131-672-_-Product

It was fixed by an AMD driver update.

I’m quite sure he is just using an old driver. Most people usually don’t update their drivers.

I do, because Watercooling, custom Cards tend to have custom PCBs and that often means you can’t use a Fullcover Block ;).

And for driver crashes, in the first 2 Months with my 980ti I had frequent bluescreens with Windows 10 (caused by driver), got fixed over time so driver Problems is not a one brand only issue ;). Never had issues with 290 and UE4 (Windows 10).

I have the r9 380, and still experiencing the crashes up till now. Been searching on the net for days nothing really works. Do you remember how you fixed you issue? Thanks.
