Questions regarding eligibility

Hi,

I represent a special education school in the Netherlands that focuses on providing practical hands-on education to young-adults (16-18 mostly) that have learning difficulties, many of which are autistic. My own situation is a little complex: I am neither a student nor an employee. I do some work for them that could be considered freelance and ranges from administrative work to programming, with some consulting thrown in for good measure. Based on this context, I have a couple of questions:

  • Would we be eligible for UE4? (we are a registered special ed school)
  • I’m in the process of starting a new project create a virtual tour of our immediate environment using UE4. This has been greenlit as recently as a week ago, although due to severe budget constraints I was only budgeted for two months of UE4 (one near the start of the project, another near the finish for important or useful updates). Would the project I mentioned be doable under this particular license? (the virtual tour would be available on our website as a free download - it is intended purely to help autistic young adults who need to come to us but are anxious about it get more comfortable with the building, its insides, and its surroundings.)
  • I plan to discuss the options we have at offering a start with UE4 for our IT group. The sign-up form asks for the number of student licenses. However, we offer a range of practical education and due to the nature of the personal challenges our students face, we need a great deal of flexibility on what they will do. Most new students start out doing a bit of everything so that we can all find out they’re good at and what their problem areas are. Since it’s hard to give any one answer to this question in our situation, how would you suggest we handle this question?
  • The information on the new “education” subsection of the Unreal Engine website describes what students get, but it does not describe to what extent this applies to employees of the school. Does this extend to them as well? For that matter, would I be able to make use of the engine in my position as a not-really-an-employee-but-almost-just-not-quite-wait-what-this-is-rather-confusing? And would we (and I) be able to do so on our home computers? (of particular importance to me, since I am only on location once or twice a week)

Sorry for all the questions – I know you’re still hard at work fleshing things out. I’m just very excited to possibly be able to use UE4 for an extended amount of time for our virtual tour project as well as for potential future use for our students. Thank you very much for offering UE4 this way. I believe this move will be to the benefit of everybody, from amateurs, to indies, to professionals in the industry, and for yourselves as well.

As you’ve described it, your institution is eligible for free academic use of Unreal Engine 4.

Please have a full-time faculty member fill out the form on the page Learn How to Use Unreal Engine - A Powerful Real-Time 3D Creation Platform - Unreal Engine to sign up. Once that is done (please allow a few days for response), any teacher or administrator, which would include contractors such as yourself, can gain access. Eligible students, teachers, and administrators can use UE4 on any combination of school and personal computers.

Thank you very much Tim, I’ll get on that right away.
