Hello Epic Games,
I first want to thank you for your amazing engine and the work you have done on it so far, it has been a great help in my journey to becoming a game developer. Blueprints are an amazing tool to get new developers off the ground and experienced ones’ visions on the screen. I also appreciate the graphical power of the engine, it truly helps in making games look their very best. Overall, Unreal Engine 5 is largely a positive experience, which is why I am writing this. I have some concerns as to where the future of Unreal Engine is headed and I wanted to share some of those concerns and questions to see if I could potentially help shape the future of the engine (even if it’s only the slightest amount). I’d first like to ask a few questions about Blueprints and their depreciation moving into Unreal Engine 6. My first one being, why you are choosing to not have a visual scripting alternative for verse. Blueprints were and still are a great tool for scripting for both experts and beginners. Without it, many games would not be possible. Popular names such as Choo Choo Charles and Tartarus relied on this way of coding to express their creative vision more effectively, and I personally feel it would be a shame to make that way of working outdated. The second question I have is will the Large Language Models used in Unreal Engine be used to train off of our or other people’s work? While this is a bit of a divisive topic, I feel this is an important one. Many people, myself included, view AI’s use of other people’s work without consent to be unethical, so I wanted to ask how you plan to deal with this issue, if at all, moving forward. Once more, I thank you for making my game development journey much more exciting and lively with the tools you have made. It truly is a pleasure to work in Unreal Engine and I hope that this feeling stays within the community for years to come.
Sincerely,
Logan Kane
