Questions about the best practices

Hello, I am a beginner in the field of photography (and in the reality capture). I bought a Entreprise License and I have not problem with the software. Everything works well !

I need your help to know out which setup is best suited for this capturing reality software.

Question 1: Witch cloth better?
White, Green or Black?
eg: https://www.amazon.co.jp//dp/B08HCBV2FB/

Question 2: How can I resolve the shadows problems?

Question 3: Are there suitable lamps specially for the capture reality?

Question 4: Are there any distances to respect between the cloth, the target object and the camera? (what’s the rules?)

Best Regard

Hi Palace-square,

I will try to answer your questions.

Question 1: The basic is to have cloth without texture, which applies all of them. What I can see, the most used are black and white, but it is up to you and on the dataset, which you will be scanning. So, if you plan to scan some green objects, it is better to use different color cloths.

Question 2: You need to use diffuse light around the scanned object. In some cases is used diffuse tent.

Question 3: It is related with Q2, there is no special lamp for RealityCapture, the basic is to have lighted the object from all sides with diffused light.

Question 4: There are some rules to be followed, which you can find there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9e_NLp_FaUk&t=180s

Hello Ondrej Trhan CR

Thank you for your answer !
Your recommendations are very valuable.

Do you think having a X-Rite color checker is useful?
eg. https://www.amazon.co.jp//dp/B06XF96Q7S/

I don’t how to use it on RealtyCapture yet and if it’s a good idea.

I am looking for anything that can improve the quality of the objects.

Last question: How to improve the quality of the 3D model? Is it possible only with this software? Do you advise me to export the 3d model to another modeling software? (eg. Blender)

Hi Palace-square,

it is good way to have this checker, but you can’t use it in RealityCapture. You can use it before in some photo correction software.

It is possible to correct the model in RealityCapture, but mostly as some basic step. It is better to do in some third party software.
