questions about making a map mod

I have little to no experience in anything related to modding and have never used unreal engine before. If I wanted to make a map larger than the current ark map how large would I need to make it?

I also tried importing heightmaps from L3DT but the stuff that was imported looked absolutely nothing like what was open in L3DT. I’m probably doing something wrong but I’m not sure what. Also i read somewhere that ark doesn’t support the tiled worlds, can anyone confirm that?

I’m interested in how large the maps can be made too for a project I have planned. Subscribing to this thread!

stay within replication distance, that’s 1,000,000 and -1,000,000 X and Y

oh im way outside that by a whole million lol

EDIT: I do not suggest you start off with a large map, you can always expand it by adding more landscapes and even extend your current (up to 650mb per umap file) Also make sure you keep checking the player scale, this is something i messed up with at the very start and i am still fixing it, it looks nice from afar but when you start roaming you will notice that the landscape is very plain. so keep an eye on the scaling

How do you combine multiple landscapes to form one large map? I was actually using your tutorial as a basis but you don’t cover how to do that, and the size of the landscape you choose in your tutorial puts a bit of strain on my computer so even making smaller landscapes than that and piecing them together would be nice to know how to do. Although I have another 8GB of RAM that is supposed to be arriving sometime today which would definitely help that problem.

I simply make a new umap file, make it active and create a new landscape, I then unlock it and move it where i wanted it (making sure it overlaps slightly for “welding” later) then i start shaping it like i want it, making sure it kinda continues where the other landscape stops (it is alot easier to hide the “weld” in flat area’s)

There is a second way which i have not done as i discovered it way later.

You can use the add tool (under landscape) and simply keep adding to your landscape to make it bigger with this feature you can actually make your landscapes 10000x10000 instead of just 32x32 (do note max umap size for cooking is 600mb) Once you got the desired size (make sure its a perfect square) then use the move tool to divide the landscape up to smaller pieces (either 2x2 or 3x3 etc etc)

Awesome thank you so much uzumi!
