Question about materials

Hello, I’m totally new to this and I wasn’t sure where to ask this question, so I’m sorry if it doesn’t fit the content creation category. I’ve been following some tutorials on materials and textures, and I’ve noticed that a lot of the materials come out looking really nice and professional. This might seem strange, but I was wondering whether there was any way to try and reduce the quality of the final product? What if I wanted to make graphics that looked like they came out of a PS2-era game? Would that be something more to do with the amount of polygons on the model itself, the material applied to it, or the lighting on the level? And does anyone know any resources or communities online that I could look into in order to achieve this? I’ve tried searching around for similar questions, but I haven’t managed to find much.
