question about audio

Can I use original audio clips from the Netflix series “Squid Game” in my Squid Game map? The audio clips provide instructions for the minigame and are between 10 and 30 seconds long.

Hello Brujo,

The Brand Rules states:

  1. Limits to Squid Game Characters and Assets. Do not import any Squid Game-related characters or assets that may infringe the Squid Game intellectual property, into UEFN and/or use them in your islands. You may only use the Squid Game characters or assets officially provided to you in UEFN.

In this case I’d consider audio clips to fall under the definition of ‘assets’.

Looking at this from a ‘complex web of incentives and permissions’ sort of perspective: Say you do rip audio clips, and your map becomes successful - a percentage of your success will go to Netflix/Squid Game IP holders, so the incentive would exist for them to not strictly enforce IP restrictions so they can continue to profit. To be clear - you should follow the stated rules. (And I imagine any audio from show should be automatically detected and rejected through moderation tools)

Here’s another thought though: What if you were to re-record the instructions yourself? (I think using AI to generate voices would be acceptable in this case as well)

It raises the question of whether the instructions themselves would be considered IP. (A question that I do not have an answer to) - But if you modify the instructions to better suit your experience, I think that would put you further into the ‘acceptable use of IP’ territory.
