Publishing/Licensing Question

Thanks for taking a minute to read my question.

I’m making a simple Mahjong game ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahjong ), and cannot, for some reason, seem to be able to find the terminology I need for some proper Googling.

I’m looking for the copyright or publishing information. Steam, at least, only has the Solitaire version, which is entirely different rules and gameplay.

Without some direction, I can only assume the rights-holder has it locked down, or that there isn’t enough interest in the states for some good ol’ 4-player Mahjong (or a mix of the two).

If someone reading this can recommend a resource, your help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Considering how old the game is, there’s not likely to be a copyright on it, only the custom design of the game pieces I think

That’s good news so far. I intentionally avoided using anyone’s designs. A solid understanding of each character is needed for me to make multiple styles.
Thanks!

When in doubt, choose another option.

As darth said there isn’t likely to be any legal backing for the game, but you never know.
I’m sure you can make a Mahjong game so long as it is not a replica of the other.

Late reply but there is a version of mahjong (The real one) on steam! It is called ‘Mahjong Pretty Girls Battle’. Yeah I know the title/theme are a little risque but the game runs really nicely and is a good challenge. There is a lot the game could build on (custom rules, tournament mode, 3 player mode, multiplayer, etc.) but I really enjoyed it for just wanting to play mahjong. I’m also going to start building a mahjong game in ue4. I only have a lot of experience in Unity so this will also be good for me to learn all about ue4. Message me here or anywhere else if you want to talk or anything like that.

Lol let’s hope I have better naming sense. I love anime, but this isn’t up my alley.

canpan14, when I reach a certain point, I may message you. Right now I only have a little time here and there to work on my tile meshes (yes, i’m starting those first to get better aquainted with Maya LT and the Mahjong Kanji). I eventually want to make multiple different tile sets that can be swapped. Looking forward to the beautiful effects I can get out of UE4, but not looking forward to translating the rules into blueprints.

Thanks, everyone, for your feedback!
