PSA : temporal AA does NOT work with highresshot!

https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Resources/ContentExamples/PostProcessing/1_14/index.html

Now we know why our screenshots are always ugly and it’s probably exactly what happens too when we try to export a movie by image sequence!

Best solution is probably r.screenpercentage + print screen and record with shadowplay or an external software like fraps.

I hope it’s something that will be addressed soon tho, it’s vital for architecture viz!

I will give fxaa a try but temporal looked better imo! It’s a bummer to have to go back to fxaa.

Why do you even need Temporal AA with using HighResShot? Its basically downsampling and looks a lot better than Temporal AA could ever look.

It’s day and night!

The way I understand it, AA is not only useful to smooth out edges… it improves the whole image quality. Prevent ghosting and stuff like that. I use both screen percentage up and temporal AA.

small test.

1st image is a print screen of my scene with temporal AA using r.screenpercentage 125. Gave a 1920x1080 image.

now this image is made with r.screenpercentage 125 + high res shot ‘‘6’’ (gave a huge image) of the scene with no AA and downscaled to 1920x1080 in photoshop. Notice the water puddles and the deck?

If it works the same with matinee export, would I need to edit 3000 frames one by one in photoshop to resize them and get a decent looking result?

At first everything seemed too “blurry” with TXAA but TXAA + “Super Sampling” (see below) I can really appreciate TXAA.

Agreed, do not use HighResScreenshot, use TXAA with Screen Percentage 150% or 200% then use PrintScreen capture or Nvidia Shadowplay for 1080p, 2K, etc.

For Matinee, that’s for people like myself who cannot run 2K smooth and with Shadowplay broken  …Same principle applies though, record out frame-by-frame with TXAA at 4K then even the 1080p versions will look good. To be honest I have not had any major issues with Matinee, only that with VXGI max frame-by-frame I could do is 3K+. Non-VXGI I can do frame-by-frame 4K. Hence with Matinee I can render 4K 60FPS videos (only thing is having to mux in the audio in post)… see videos below.

Whatever method is used, TXAA is good to give the softness but super sampling (Screen Percentage 150%-200%) and/or downscaling from 6K(?), 4K, etc. gives a real nice blend of smoothness and crispness.

So between the or Matinee options, enjoy!
