projects don’t get saved on Linux? It always wants new project-convert from another version and never finds any projects previously saved.

Sounds like you may have encountered a bug of some sort. As darthviper said, could you please go to http://answers.unrealengine.com and enter a bug report to us? That will allow me to assign a linux specialist to look into the error.
