Hello, this is my Project Nocturne (it’s not final game name). This is upcoming FPS COOP game based on some classic Sci Fi horror movie. For now I can’t realy say how game will look at final build because I still have many things to learn.
But my targets are;
main objective is simple - bughunt
COOP for 4 players
4 marine perks;
* Rifleman - Got Pulse Rifle, Flamethrower and Pistol - he’s reloading and moving faster than other perks, can throw glowstick to generate medium ammount of light for infinite time
* Technic - Can weld doors, put auto turrets, got motion tracker(can be used with pistol only) shotgun and pistol, can resupply ammo
* Medic - Healing teammates, got flares that generates large ammount of light for short time, got pulse rifle and pistol
* Trooper - got M56 Smartgun(very high fire rate no need to reload) and pistol, cant sprint, better armor than other perks
randomly generated locations
small side missions (turn on generator what give power online for example)
leveling and customization system (no loot system you are just getting experience after finishing missions and then you can unlock cosmetic only)
License? I would like to upload this game for free if I will finish it I dont want any money from this. Yeah some meshes are ported but why can’t I use them if I have purchased all Alien games?
There’s nothing wrong with making a fan game. It’s no different then making an animated fan-film. I also find it awesome when recreational game designers build a game around the rules of a movie or comic-book’s canon.
I agree that ripping assets isn’t that impressive compared to creating your own, but It’s not wrong when it comes to making a fan game. Screwattack’s Deathbattle and so many (even well done) SFM projects rip character models all the time.
RajenPL, Don’t delete the project. But I do advise in maybe just using the ripped assets as placeholders. I believe original art assets could make the project stronger.
If this doesn’t encourage you RajenPL that you are doing nothing wrong, then I don’t know what will. This is a Terminator fan game that I’ve made back in 2010 using UDK, called FPS Terminator.
Is FPS terminator very buggy and barely playable? Yes. Did I ever finish the project? No.
But that’s not my point. My primary focus on this project was to recreate the atmosphere of the future war scenes from the movies.
Even being unfinished and barely playable, this project on my portfolio alone has got me a professional video game job position, Twice.
I also want to mention that all of the characters, weapons, and terminator unit models were made by me (many of the environment assets were not, they were Epic’s example content from UDK). I do encourage you to eventually replace the ripped assets with original art.
As people said , nothing wrong with using other assets when making a fan game. A lot of fan games ( most ) use assets from existing games. Most companies don’t tend to go after these types of projects , but some of the more trigger happy ones can do so just need to keep a relatively low profile until the game is nearly done. Then once the game is out there , it’s out there forever.
Personally I am a huge alien fan and after the terrible colonial marines I would really play a decent alien game so keep up the good work.
Its mindbuggling how people still believe the most wrongest **** based on nothing.
Based on facts i tell you this now:
Before you install or even buy any game you are signing a EULA wich is a contract binding you to rules.
This EULA can take a variety of shapes and it depends on that what you are allowed to do with a game.
That stated it is in almost all cases illegal to:
A: Crack open encrypted data - Cause its copyrighted and protected by country law and ownership.
B: Releasing data from Games over third parties is literally piracy of Copyrighted data wich again is Protected.
This here is NO fangame. Its a bundle of stolen assets.
Some studios allow a few of these things, like Bethesda with their modding community.
And some dont see a threat in smaller Projects…
But it stays, if you break the EULA contract you are a criminal.
**
THIS IS NOT A FANGAME.**
Read the EULA of the game and make sure every of your steps is allowed.
Breaking an EULA is NOT a crime. Don’t know where you got that. It is a breach a contract through and it is copyright infringement in this case and you can get sued if the other company chooses to ( none that i heard of did.The ones that acted limited themselves to a cease and desist).
So as others have mentioned, he is free to do what he wishes, most companies don’t really care, some embrace it even but there is a small chance of getting a cease and desist from Gearbox in this case i think.
Breaching the EULA (where there is contractual consense and not just giving the law again) is breach of contract. The act of breaching a contract is then considered as illegal as contracts are mutual agreements and should be respected and fulfilled by all parties involved.
I dont think you respect the work of gamedevs as much as you should do.
Respect Gearbox? For what? Spending A:CM budget on Borderlands? Working on game for 7 years, showing us not true gameplay trailers and **** lie to us (alien universe fans)? And finally they give us completly **** called Aliens Colonial Marines.
Anyway this Project is closed and I will work with new one with all assets made by me also this won’t be in Aliens universe.
I guess you could call it a breach of civil law ( which depending on the place you live in could or could not be considered illegal). But even so the point is that he is free to do as he wishes and I personally would encourage him to create a fan game for himself if that is his passion and what he wants to do.
In all likelihood nobody will care and he will learn a lot in the process. Worst case , he will get a cease and desist letter at one point and he will have to stop working on it.
He won’t even have to stop working on it. A cease and desist in this context pertains to distribution. As an owner of the game he can rip it to bits and do what he likes with it, he just can’t give it away or publish it.
If he was working on this for his game dev portfolio then he’s totally within his rights and it looks like he’s doing a nice job too.
