I need to reset my laptop soon, and I want to make sure my Unreal Engine project files are completely safe. What’s the best method to back them up and explain it please? Can I temporarily upload them to Google Drive and redownload them later, or do I need to buy something to transfer everything for now? and if I do need to buy anything let me know.
You just need to copy your project folder to somewhere else. The most important part of that folder is the content folder.
Two copies is not a bad idea. One on a stick, and another you can zip up and upload to google.
When you’re done with the reset, just install the engine again, and then copy your project folder back to where it was.
Also, I want to point out that there is the File → Zip Project functionality.
What Clockwork said about the content folder is true, using File → Zip will make a zip that does not include cached files in intermediate/saved folders.
Although one minor consideration - If you’ve been using the built-in screenshot hotkey (F9) you’ll want to back those up manually since those are saved to the ‘Saved’ folder.
Another consideration - you can only open projects in the same or higher version of the engine. So don’t back up a 5.7 project and try to open it with 5.6.
